NON PRIZE WINNERS WITH A CAREER

Among the complete field of participants, there were four singers worth mentioning that did not make it to the finals. The first one should be English tenor Patrick Costelhoe, {LINK TO IVC-DD PAGE 1964} who was exempted from the preliminary round because of his previous prize in the 1964 edition. The second one is the later renowned Belgian soprano Erika Pauwels, who did not pass the First Round. The third would be Polish soprano Helena Łazarska, who had a fine career as a Lieder singer . Nell Hall is reviewed in the IVC 1965 Press section. Finally, we mention Jeanne Companjen, best know today as the founder of the Dutch opera company Opera Trionfo. {LINK BOTH TO EMPTY PAGE IN OPERA COMPANIES DUTCH DIVAS}

Patrick Costelhoe

For Patrick Costlhoe we refer to out 1964 IVC portrait, and his 401Dutchdivas page.

Jeanne Companjen

Helena Łazarska performed in recitals and operas throughout Europe, USA, South America, and in Festivals inBarcelona, Paris, Caracas, Avignon, Prague, the ‘Warsaw Autumn,’ and the Holland Festival, with concert and opera repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. Her song repertoire of mainly German Lied and French Mélodies includes 800 songs, in addition to which she has sung more that 40 oratorios. She was longtime soloist at the Schlesischen Staatsoper in Beuthen (Poland). Among her most important roles are Mozart’s Susanna, Countess, Zerlina, Elvira, Ilia, Pamina; the Gounod’s Margarethe, Leoncavallo’s Nedda, Puccini’s Mimi and Liù, Bizet's Micaela, Tchaikovsky’s Tatjana, and Verdi's Desdemona. Her educational activities strated at the Conservatories of Katowice, Gdansk and Krakow, where she was also long-standing head of the vocal department.

Erika Pauwels.
